Allen’s Cross ‘Growing Neighbourhoods’ project is a brand new exciting project taking place at Allen’s Cross Community Centre in Northfield in partnership with Northfield Eco Centre.
The aim of the project is to involve local people in coming together to turn a disused piece of land at the side of the community centre into a community garden. To create a space that people can come along to and enjoy, where people can learn about growing, cooking and bottling good food and to produce fresh food that can be sold cheaply or distributed free to those in need.
Work has carried on at a pace throughout the winter months and the garden is looking good. We are now approaching the end of our first year. First year events included a grand opening day, mad hatters tea party, harvest festival, and Christmas carol singing. We also held a number of courses including beginners gardening, composting, earth oven building and how to make soups, jams and chutneys. There will be lots more to look forward to this year beginning with a wine making course which starts on 11th March and a family open day on 1st April. Other events will include a summer open day on 16th July, Harvest Festival on 18th September and Carols by candlelight on 15th December. On Friday mornings during the summer months 22nd, 29th July and 5th, 12th August we will be holding produce sales where produce grown in our garden including veggies and flowers can be purchased very reasonably. Look out for the trolley outside the centre on Friday Mornings
There will be lots of events for all the family throughout the year the 2:30pm. If you would like to volunteer or want to learn more about the project telephone Sheila on 0121 478 3310 or just turn up on the day.
